Welcome to the HSOY web site

President Wendy Prange

Welcome!

Welcome to the website of the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth!  Whether you are a member of HSOY, a resident of Yarmouth, a potential visitor to our community, or a genealogist researching your family history, we hope you will find some useful information on these pages.

The Historical Society would like to thank Nigel Dobereiner, an HSOY member and part-time Yarmouth resident, for his time and talent in creating our site.  We are very pleased with the results and grateful to Nigel for his hard work!

We would also like to thank Nina Cosgrove, a talented local artist and the wife of our former president Cliff Cosgrove, for the lovely painting of the Yarmouth Port Common that graces our homepage.

Within these pages you can learn about who we are at the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth, take a tour through our villages, learn about Yarmouth’s history, find out what kind of collections we own and how you can use them for your own research,  read about many of the historical sites in the town, and be led to related resources and sites that may be of interest.

Frozen Ship

Yarmouth’s history is rich and diverse and we are continually amazed at the new topics that present themselves almost daily for further exploration.

Cellar House
From Native Americans to our first European settler (the only person in America that we know of who was a character in one of Shakespeare’s plays!); from the glory days of the deep-water captains to the Quaker community called Friends’ Village; there is much history in Yarmouth to be shared.  A walk today down Old King’s Highway, or a boat ride down Bass River, will convey that sense of history that is still very much alive and an important and treasured part of our Yarmouth community.

So, whether you take a virtual tour on these pages, or come see us in person, we hope you will enjoy the history of our town as much as we do.  Welcome to Old Yarmouth!
