Packet Ship

"Of course the river has always entered largely in the life of the village ..." During the 19th century, Bass River was home to many fishing schooners, coastal vessels and packet ships. "Some of the older residents tell of counting 60, 125 and 160 vessels at one time off Bass River. " The coastal vessels traded goods up and down the coast from Maine to the Carolinas, while the packet ships ran regularly schedule trips to New York, Boston and other ports. Here a sloop lies anchored at one of the many landings along the river. The building to the far left is believed to be the magnesia factory.
