Bass River Bridge
| Built in 1832, the Bass River Bridge provided an important link across Bass River to Dennis, which is visible on the other side in this image. The toll keeper, who lived in the tollhouse pictured to the left, made sure that all those who used the bridge paid the appropriate toll for individuals, horses, and carriages. According to the recollection of villagers, the tollhouse was a "favorite resort evenings for men and boys." Even after the bridge was made free, it was often filled with "idlers" and later contained a pool table, which was the cause of much unfavorable talk among the "church-going people of the community." |
