The Casino

About the same time as the Great Island Club was being built, the Englewood Beach Development Association came into existence. This Association planned streets and built cottages along the unspoiled beaches of Lewis Bay. A large lodging establishment, called the Englewood Hotel, was also built along with a "Great Casino" designed to host parties and dances for summer visitors. The Casino had bowling alleys and bathhouses downstairs and in later years a restaurant was established upstairs called the Windmill Tea Room. The Tea Room was a very popular attraction, catering not only to summer visitors but also to patrons who drove in from all over the Cape. The Casino served as the gathering point for the active Englewood Yacht Club and was the center of activity for the summer community. The hurricane of 1944 leveled this grand building, which stood near what is today the town parking lot for Englewood Beach.
