Looking west on Old King's Highway

Yes it does snow on Cape Cod! Here some hearty souls are hiking down the center of what today is a very busy route 6A. While sleighs could glide over the snow, watch out when the snow melted -- the dirt roadway would turn to a muddy quagmire, difficult for horse or human to traverse. This photograph shows the beautiful elm trees, which once lined the scenic road but were wiped out by Dutch Elm disease in the 1940s. The First National Bank Building is pictured on the left, which is today the site of Fleet Bank and Cape Cod Bank and Trust.
