Mill Pond
| Looking toward Keveney Lane in Cummaquid, this image shows Mill Pond with the "old mill" in the foreground. Mill Pond, originally called Stony Cove or Stony Creek, was one of the earliest settled areas in Yarmouth, home to original settlers Andrew Hallet, Thomas Starr, William Chase, Gyles Hopkins, Robert Dennis and Joshua Barnes. Little is known about the old mill, which is believed to have been a grist mill. This photograph can be dated between 1889 and 1891: in 1889, the stone bridge over Mill Pond was constructed and in 1891, the mill was blown down in a gale as reported by the Yarmouth Register. |
