WE’RE ALL VOLUNTEERS HERE,
DOING WHAT WE LOVE.

As one of the most active historical societies on the Cape, we are indebted to our wonderful Volunteers who make everything go and go smoothly. And because we do so many different things you’re bound to find your niche here. Your time, experience, skills, and enthusiasm will all make a difference.

Below we’ve highlighted just a few of the Volunteer Opportunities we offer. Use the form at the bottom of the page to indicate what you’d like to learn more about. If you have a special area of expertise, tell us. As a Volunteer you’ll be doing more than finding your own role here. You’ll be helping to preserve Yarmouth’s rich history and pass it on to future generations.

BECOME AN AMBASSADOR

As a Docent at the Captain Bangs Hallet House Museum, you’ll lead visitors from all over the world on a tour revealing the lives of a deep water Sea Captain and his family and how they lived during his up to 18-month voyages to China. Our other Docents will mentor you and show you how.

GUIDE RESEARCHERS

If you have a passion for history you’ll find a warm welcome in our Cobbler Shop helping others in search of historic characters, events, and the provenance of old Yarmouth homes
in our extensive Archival Collection and suggesting other sources.

PRESERVE NATURE

If the outdoors appeal to you, imagine caring for our Nature Trails and the over 50 acres of Cape woodland through which those trails run. (Psst, they also harbor an abandoned golf course, the very first private course on the Cape. There’s even a map.)

ASSIST OUR MEMBERS

We value our many Members whose participation and support make all
that we do possible. By assisting our Membership Team you can play a critical role in helping us continue to enthusiastically pursue our mission in this our 65th year and beyond.

CELEBRATE OUR 400TH

The 400th Anniversary of the Pilgrims settling at Plymouth will be huge in 2020, especially here on the Cape where they first set foot in the New World. You can help our 2020 Team make it memorable.

JOIN THE CAST

If you have a flair for the dramatic you’ll find a place with us as a Historical Interpreter in one of our events recreating a colorful historic figure (even the occasional scoundrel)
or assist our Program Committee in planning new events that bring the past and those who lived here to life.

OFFER A WARM WELCOME

Throughout the year Members of our House and Hospitality Committee add to the enjoyment of events and gatherings by literally setting the table for guests and enhancing the Kelley Chapel or the Captain Bangs Hallet House Museum with seasonal decor.

RESTORE CLASSIC COSTUMES

Perhaps you enjoy working with fine fabrics. You should know that HSOY has perhaps the most extensive collection of Vintage Costumes on
the entire Cape, all lovingly preserved and tended to for the next exhibit.

KEEP US ORGANIZED

Our Admin Volunteers work in the
B. T. Gorham Cobbler Shop that now houses our archives. But people still occasionally drive up with a pair of shoes that need repairing. It’s easily the most interesting office on the Cape.
